Avionics Test Equipment

Avionics test equipment is the ramp and bench instrumentation that airline, MRO and business-aviation technicians use to confirm that an aircraft's communication, navigation and surveillance radios behave correctly after installation, repair or a scheduled inspection. Typical flight-line sets stimulate and measure transponder (Mode A/C/S), ADS-B, TCAS, DME/TACAN, VOR, ILS and VHF/HF communication equipment without removing it from the aircraft. Novatelia sources selected avionics test sets on an RFQ basis for maintenance organisations in Oman, with project-by-project supply to other GCC countries.
Applications
- Return-to-service checks after avionics line-replaceable unit (LRU) replacement.
- Periodic transponder and altitude-reporting tests required by the operator's maintenance programme (in the US, 14 CFR 91.413 sets a 24-calendar-month interval) [1].
- ADS-B Out message verification and TCAS functional tests on the ramp [2].
- Antenna feeder VSWR and distance-to-fault checks on RF cabling [2].
Equipment types
- Multi-function flight-line test sets covering surveillance, navigation and communications in one instrument (example: VIAVI AVX-10K) [3].
- Dedicated pitot-static / air-data test sets — see Pitot-Static & Air Data Test Equipment.
- Transponder and ADS-B specific testers — see ADS-B & Transponder Test Equipment.
Technologies and maintenance tasks
- Surveillance: ATCRBS/Mode S interrogation, GICB register reads, ADS-B 1090ES and 978 MHz UAT [2].
- Navigation: ILS localizer/glideslope/marker beacon, VOR (108.00–117.95 MHz) and DME (962–1213 MHz reply band) simulation [2][4].
- Communications: AM, FM, SSB and SELCAL tone checks [2].
How to select equipment
- Map the aircraft fleet's installed avionics (Mode S level, ADS-B version, TCAS I/II) to the test functions you need.
- Check which test procedures the set automates — e.g. FAR Part 43 transponder tests and AC 20-165 / CS-ACNS ADS-B test types on the AVX-10K [2].
- Confirm the required test distance and antenna kit for over-the-air testing [4].
- Plan calibration turnaround time before purchase; ask the OEM for its recommended interval.
Calibration and traceability
- Ramp test sets are measuring instruments: the maintenance organisation's procedures should require a valid calibration certificate traceable to national standards before the set is used for return-to-service tests.
- Calibration is arranged through the manufacturer or a laboratory the customer approves.
Customer types
- Airline line-maintenance stations
- Part-145-style MRO organisations and avionics shops
- Business and general aviation operators
- Aviation training organisations
Relevant standards and guidance
- FAA AC 43-6D – altitude reporting equipment and transponder maintenance practices [5].
- 14 CFR 91.411 and 91.413 (US) – altimeter/altitude reporting and transponder inspection rules [6][1].
- Operators in Oman and the GCC follow their national authority's requirements; confirm the applicable rule with your quality department.

Frequently asked technical questions
What equipment is required for aircraft avionics testing?
At minimum a flight-line communication/navigation/surveillance test set, a pitot-static test set for air-data instruments and altitude reporting, and RF cable/antenna test capability. Multi-function sets such as the VIAVI AVX-10K combine transponder, ADS-B, TCAS, DME, VOR/ILS, comms and VSWR tests [2].
How often does a transponder have to be tested?
Under US rules (14 CFR 91.413) ATC transponders must be tested and inspected within the preceding 24 calendar months; your national authority and the approved maintenance programme govern operators in Oman and the GCC [1].
Can one test set cover ADS-B and TCAS?
Yes, some do. The AVX-10K data covers ADS-B Out, ADS-B In target generation (up to five static 1090 MHz targets) and TCAS I/II/TAS intruder scenarios [2].
Does Novatelia calibrate avionics test equipment?
Novatelia supplies equipment by RFQ; calibration is arranged through the manufacturer or a laboratory acceptable to your quality system. Ask in your RFQ which calibration certificate ships with the unit.
Does Novatelia supply avionics test equipment in Oman?
Yes, selected equipment is sourced on request for Oman-based customers, subject to manufacturer channel rules, export conditions and availability.
