ADS-B & Transponder Test Equipment

Tel-Instrument SDR-OMNI handheld avionics test set
Manufacturer product image (Tel-Instrument Electronics); source.

ADS-B and transponder test equipment interrogates an aircraft's ATC transponder over the air or by cable and decodes its replies and ADS-B squitters, letting technicians confirm Mode A/C/S replies, reported altitude, aircraft address, and ADS-B Out position and identity data. Airline line stations, MROs and avionics shops use these testers for periodic and post-maintenance checks. Novatelia sources selected surveillance test sets on an RFQ basis for operators in Oman and qualified GCC projects.

Frequently asked technical questions

What equipment is used to test ADS-B transponders?

A ramp test set that interrogates the transponder and decodes its 1090 MHz extended squitters (and 978 MHz UAT where fitted); the VIAVI AVX-10K is one example covering ADS-B Out/In, GICB and UAT [2].

Can transponders be tested without removing them?

Yes, flight-line sets test over the air with an antenna at a defined distance, or via RF cable to the antenna port [4].

What is GICB?

Ground-Initiated Comm-B: the ground station reads Mode S registers; test sets can monitor known registers or the full set [2].

How is TCAS tested on the ground?

The test set acts as a simulated intruder (Mode S or ATCRBS) and runs a scenario against the aircraft's TCAS [2].

Is altitude reporting part of the transponder test?

Yes, the correspondence between the altimeter and transponder-reported altitude is checked; see FAA AC 43-6D [5].
