NOVATELIA ENGINEERING LIBRARY

Engineering Explanations for Real Technology Decisions

Explore technical definitions, comparisons and engineering references connected to Novatelia's published solutions and services. Each explanation addresses a practical technology or procurement question. Engineering formulas include assumptions and validation requirements rather than replacing project-specific calculations.

The explanation articles support a solution or service already published on this site. The formula cards are working notes. They are not indexed as separate guides, and they are not a certified design. This library is not republished once per city. Nothing here is described as an external peer review.

Cybersecurity

These notes separate detection software, access control, endpoint management, and industrial security. A product name is not a staffed watch and not a certification.

  1. 01
    What is SIEM?

SIEM collects logs from systems an organization already runs and turns them into events a person can investigate. It is not a staffed operations center.

  2. 02
    SIEM vs SOC

A SIEM is a log and event platform. A SOC is a staffed operating model. This site publishes the platform design, not a round-the-clock center.

  3. 03
    SIEM vs EDR

EDR records what a computer did. SIEM collects logs from many systems. They answer different questions and are often both required.

  4. 04
    EDR vs Antivirus

Antivirus blocks known files. EDR records host activity so an investigation can continue after a file verdict. Many products now include both.

  5. 05
    EDR vs XDR

EDR is endpoint activity. XDR is a vendor’s name for correlating that activity with other products in the same suite. The suite boundary matters.

  6. 06
    What is UEBA?

UEBA looks for accounts or hosts that behave unlike their own history. It is a detection method, not proof of an attack and not a staffed watch.

  7. 07
    UEM vs MDM

MDM manages phones and tablets. UEM is the wider estate: computers as well as mobile devices, with the same enrollment and policy questions.

  8. 08
    IAM vs PAM

IAM is how people sign in and receive ordinary access. PAM is the tighter control around accounts that can change the environment.

  9. 09
    Patch Management vs Vulnerability Management

Vulnerability management finds exposures. Patch management applies the updates that close some of them. A scan is not a completed update.

  10. 10
    What is ZTNA?

ZTNA grants an application session after identity and device checks, instead of placing the person on the whole network. It is not automatic zero trust.

  11. 11
    What is OT Cybersecurity?

OT cybersecurity separates plant and building-control networks from the office and controls how they meet. It is not a copy of an office antivirus rollout.

Software

These notes cover application shape, integration, and two different ways to use a model. RAG and an AI agent are not interchangeable designs.

  1. 01
    Web App vs Website

A website publishes information. A web application carries a workflow with accounts, data, and rules. Novatelia scopes them as different builds.

  2. 02
    Native vs React Native

Native apps are written for one platform. React Native shares more of the interface code. Novatelia does not publish an app-store product of its own.

  3. 03
    What is API Integration?

API integration is a defined contract so two systems can exchange a named record. It is not a promise that any two products can be connected.

  4. 04
    What is an Enterprise Portal?

An enterprise portal is a signed-in place that shows each person the tasks and records their role allows. It is not a public website and not a packaged ERP.

  5. 05
    What is RAG?

RAG retrieves passages from a named document set and passes them to a model with the question. It is not a new model and not a guarantee of a correct answer.

  6. 06
    What is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is a workflow allowed to take named actions, not a person and not an open-ended product. Each action still needs a boundary.

  7. 07
    RAG vs Fine-Tuning

RAG supplies documents at question time. Fine-tuning changes a model with examples. Novatelia does not publish a trained model of its own.

Cloud

These notes cover the two published productivity suites, mail authentication, and the difference between a backup copy, retention, and a recovery objective.

  1. 01
    Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace

Both are hosted mail and file suites. The difference is the identity, files, and devices already in use. Novatelia is not a partner of either.

  2. 02
    What is Microsoft Intune?

Intune is Microsoft’s device-management service, available only when the customer’s license includes it. It is not assumed with every mailbox.

  3. 03
    What is Entra ID?

Entra ID is Microsoft’s cloud directory for a Microsoft 365 tenant. It is the identity boundary, not a privileged-access vault by default.

  4. 04
    What is DMARC?

DMARC is a DNS policy that tells receivers what to do when mail fails SPF or DKIM checks. It does not by itself stop a mailbox being compromised.

  5. 05
    SPF vs DKIM vs DMARC

SPF lists sending hosts. DKIM signs a message. DMARC states what receivers should do when those checks do not align with the visible domain.

  6. 06
    Cloud Backup vs On-Prem Backup

Cloud backup stores copies in a provider’s location. On-premises backup keeps them on equipment the organization runs. Neither publishes a recovery time.

  7. 07
    RPO vs RTO

RPO is how much data a design can afford to lose. RTO is how long a service can stay down. Novatelia does not publish either number.

Communications

Messaging depends on the provider, the permission to send, the template, and the applicable policy. Delivery is not guaranteed, and bulk sending is not an unrestricted feature.

  1. 01
    WhatsApp Business App vs API

The Business app is a phone inbox. The API is a platform integration for named templates and a system the customer runs. Novatelia is not a Meta provider.

  2. 02
    What is WhatsApp Business API?

The WhatsApp Business API is the platform interface for business messaging from a system. Novatelia integrates it and is not a Meta or WhatsApp provider.

  3. 03
    What is OTP?

An OTP is a short-lived code sent to confirm a step such as sign-in. The sender is the provider the customer contracts. No delivery rate is published.

  4. 04
    SMS vs WhatsApp Notifications

SMS and WhatsApp notifications use different networks, contracts, and consent rules. Neither has a published delivery rate.

  5. 05
    Transactional vs Marketing Email

Transactional email is a message the person’s action triggered. Marketing email is a campaign. They use different consent, content, and often different sending paths.

From Technical Question to Relevant Engineering Service

Choose a published topic. The panel shows the explanation, the discipline, and the solution or service already linked from that article. It does not recommend a product that the destination page does not describe.

What is SIEM?

Cybersecurity. SIEM is software that collects logs from the systems an organization already runs and turns them into events a person can search and investigate. It does not watch a network by itself, and it is not a staffed security operations center. Novatelia’s published work is the design and integration of that pipeline. A round-the-clock watch is not a published offer.

Engineering Formulas & Technical Sizing References

These eight cards are working notes. The formula-article routes stay on their existing index setting. This index page is not marked noindex because the cards are notes. A card is not a certified design, and a formula does not replace a measurement.

KB-001 · fiber · 6 min

Choose Fiber from the Complete Link Requirement

Passive channel loss is one input to an optical link. It is not the whole transceiver decision.

Channel loss (dB) = fiber attenuation (dB/km) × distance (km) + splice losses (dB) + connector-pair losses (dB).

Units. Attenuation in dB/km, distance in km, each splice and connector pair in dB.

Assumptions. Use the fiber type, wavelength, and the attenuation that applies to that fiber. Count the connectors and splices on the path. Then compare the result with the transmitter output, receiver sensitivity, receiver overload, the required rate, and a margin the project sets. OS2, OM4, and OM5 are different fibers. A fiber name alone does not set a distance.

KB-002 · poe · 5 min

Check the PoE Standard and the Whole Switch Power Budget

PoE needs the device demand, the class the PSE grants, and the switch budget that can be on at the same time.

Compare each device demand with the power the PSE reserves for that class, then add the simultaneous load and compare it with the switch PoE budget.

Units. Watts at the PSE and watts available at the powered device. IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt name different class limits.

Assumptions. A manufacturer-rated PoE budget is not divided again by 0.85. That second derating double-counts loss when the published budget is already the power the supply can deliver. Per-port limits, redundancy, and the number of devices drawing power together still have to be checked.

Select Uplinks from Traffic and Resilience Requirements

An oversubscription ratio is a planning indicator made from nominal port speeds.

Planning ratio = (downlink count × downlink speed) : (usable uplink capacity in the failure case being studied).

Units. Speeds in the same unit, such as Gbit/s. The ratio is dimensionless.

Assumptions. Nominal capacity is not offered traffic and is not proof of congestion. LACP can add member links for different flows. It does not give every individual flow the combined rate of all members. EVPN-VXLAN is one architecture, not a requirement for every uplink.

Estimate CCTV Storage with Explicit Units & Parameters

A storage estimate needs an average bitrate, a retention period, and a statement of what “usable” means.

Archive bytes ≈ camera count × average bitrate (bit/s) × seconds per day × retention days × duty cycle ÷ 8.

Units. Bitrate in bit/s or Mbit/s, with the conversion written down. Decimal TB is 10^12 bytes. Binary TiB is 2^40 bytes.

Assumptions. Average bitrate is not peak bitrate. A motion or schedule fraction is not a universal correction for every variable-bitrate camera. Codec, resolution, audio, metadata, and overhead change the stream. Raw disk capacity is not usable capacity after RAID, formatting, and spare policy.

Specify the Complete Copper Cabling Channel

A copper channel is the permanent link plus the cords and connectors that complete it.

For the relevant balanced twisted-pair channel model: permanent link up to 90 m, channel up to 100 m, including the patch cords.

Units. Metres of cable, for the configuration the cited cabling standard actually covers.

Assumptions. Those lengths are not the maximum of every copper Ethernet application. Category, alien crosstalk, temperature, and the application standard can change the limit. Cat6A is a cable and connector grade, not a guarantee that any 90 m run will pass.

Confirm the Host Platform, Module & Optical Path

A module has to match the host, the coding the host enforces, and the optical path to the far end.

Check host acceptance, wavelength, fiber type, connector, transmit power, receiver sensitivity, and the receiver’s maximum input.

Units. Optical power in dBm. Attenuation in dB.

Assumptions. An overload specification is not automatically a damage threshold. Exceeding the maximum operational input can overload the receiver and can risk damage, depending on the module. No attenuator value is stated here, because that number needs both datasheets. DOM readings do not by themselves name the cause of a fault.

Size UPS Capacity and Runtime Separately

UPS capacity and battery runtime are separate calculations.

Real power (W) = apparent power (VA) × power factor.

Units. Watts, volt-amperes, and a dimensionless power factor. Runtime is hours or minutes from battery energy, not from VA.

Assumptions. Power factor converts VA to watts for the load being served. It does not produce a runtime. Runtime depends on usable battery energy, efficiency, chemistry, age, temperature, and the redundancy the design requires.

Plan a Wireless Upgrade from Clients and Site Conditions

Free-space path loss is a propagation model for an unobstructed path, not a survey of a building.

FSPL (dB) = 20 log10(distance in metres) + 20 log10(frequency in MHz) − 27.55.

Units. Distance in metres, frequency in MHz, result in dB. The constant 27.55 belongs to that pair of units.

Assumptions. Walls, multipath, interference, client radios, regulatory power and channel rules, antenna pattern, capacity, the wired uplink, and PoE are outside this equation. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are not assumed to be approved on every band and power mode in every jurisdiction.

Engineering Knowledge — Questions and Answers

01

What is the Novatelia Engineering Knowledge Hub?

It is the index of technical definitions, comparisons, and engineering notes that support Novatelia’s published solutions and services. It is not a separate product catalogue.

02

What technical subjects does it cover?

Cybersecurity, software and AI, cloud and productivity, business communications, and eight engineering formula notes for fiber, PoE, switching, CCTV storage, copper cabling, transceivers, UPS power, and wireless path loss.

03

Are the knowledge articles product advertisements?

No. Each explanation answers a technical or procurement question and points at a published solution or service where one exists. A product name on an article is a reference, not a stocking or partnership claim.

04

How do technical explanations connect to Novatelia solutions?

The article, and the explorer on this index, name the solution or service already published for that topic. The link is navigation. It does not add a capability the destination page does not describe.

05

What is the difference between a definition and a comparison article?

A definition says what one term means. A comparison places two approaches next to each other. The intent map sometimes points a “comparison” label at a solution page. That page is not retitled as a comparison.

06

How can I find a cybersecurity explanation?

Use the cybersecurity family on this page. It lists the eleven published notes, including SIEM, EDR, XDR, IAM, PAM, and ZTNA, each with its own article.

07

Where can I learn about Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace?

The comparison article is Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace. Separate notes cover Intune, Entra ID, and mail authentication. The solution pages for each suite are linked from those articles.

08

Where are AI and software development concepts explained?

The software family covers web applications, native and React Native, APIs, enterprise portals, RAG, AI agents, and RAG versus fine-tuning.

09

What engineering formulas are available?

Eight working notes: KB-001 fiber, KB-002 PoE, KB-003 switching, KB-004 CCTV storage, KB-005 copper cabling, KB-006 transceivers, KB-007 UPS power, and KB-008 wireless path loss. They are notes with assumptions, not certified designs.

10

How is an optical power budget calculated?

Start with channel loss: fiber attenuation times distance, plus splice loss, plus connector-pair loss. Then compare that loss with the module’s transmit power, receiver sensitivity, overload limit, rate, and the margin the project requires.

11

How is a switch PoE budget evaluated?

Add the power the devices actually draw at the same time and compare it with the switch PoE budget and the per-port class. A rated budget is not divided by 0.85 a second time.

12

What is a network oversubscription ratio?

It is a planning ratio of nominal downlink capacity to the usable uplink capacity in the case being studied. It does not prove that an application is congested, and LACP does not give every flow the sum of all member links.

13

How is CCTV storage estimated?

Use camera count, average bitrate, retention, and the recording duty cycle, and state whether the result is decimal TB or binary TiB. Usable capacity is what remains after RAID, formatting, and spares.

14

What is the difference between permanent link and channel?

The permanent link is the fixed cabling. The channel adds the cords and connectors used to connect equipment. A 90 m and 100 m pair applies to the structured-cabling configuration that states it, not to every copper Ethernet use.

15

What determines transceiver compatibility?

The host model and software, the port and form factor, the module coding, the fiber, the wavelength, the connector, and the far-end optic. A matching cage is not a compatibility result.

16

What is the difference between UPS capacity and runtime?

Capacity is the load the UPS can carry, with watts equal to volt-amperes times power factor. Runtime is how long the batteries can carry that load. One does not follow from the other.

17

Does free-space path loss predict real Wi-Fi coverage?

No. The formula estimates loss on an unobstructed path. Walls, interference, clients, regulatory limits, and the wired uplink are outside it. A site survey is a different activity.

18

Can an engineering formula replace a field test?

No. A formula uses assumptions. A field test measures the installed path. Acceptance still needs the criteria named in the project scope.

19

Are the technical notes certifications?

No. They are working explanations. They do not certify a design, a person, or an installation, and they are not described as externally peer-reviewed.

20

Does Novatelia publish the same article for every city?

No. The same explanation is not republished for Muscat, Sohar, Salalah, or any other city.

21

How can I find a relevant service?

Use the explorer or the related-services list. Each link goes to a page that already exists. Industry topics stay on the industries index.

22

How can I request an engineering assessment?

Open the RFQ draft or the technical assessment service. The RFQ page keeps a browser draft. It does not submit a quotation or issue a reference.

Turn a Technical Requirement into an Engineering Scope

The RFQ page keeps a browser draft. It does not submit a quotation or issue a reference. Opening a draft does not issue a quotation, submit a request, or validate a calculation.
