Definition

An API is a contract. Integration is the mapping, the error handling, and the operation of that contract between systems the customer is allowed to connect.

How it works

One system sends a request or an event. The other validates it, writes or returns the record, and both sides log the failure case. Credentials stay in a store the application can read, not in the page.

The source record and the destination record.
The contract: fields, authentication, and limits.
The failure path: retry, alert, and who corrects the data.

Use cases

A portal must read a customer record from an existing system.

Can every product be integrated?

No. The work requires a contract the vendor allows and credentials the customer is permitted to use. A logo on this site is not proof of a connector.

Does integration include building the product?

Not by default. A new workflow is a web application or an enterprise system. The API page is the connection between systems that already have a role.
