Autonomous Mobile Robots — AMR

Autonomous mobile robots move material between storage, picking, production and dispatch. Their performance depends on the site: the network, the systems they talk to and the way the floor is organised. We plan both together.

The problem

Internal Logistics Without the Walking

In warehouses and plants, people spend a large part of each shift walking material from one point to another. AMRs take over repetitive transport, but only when the site, the network and the systems are ready for them.

Who it is for

  • Warehouses & Distribution Centres
  • Manufacturing Plants
  • Retail Back-of-House
  • Ports & Logistics Hubs
  • Hospitals (internal logistics)

How it works

Where AMRs Fit

  • 01

    Material Transport

Moving pallets, carts and totes between zones.

    • Point-to-point transport
    • Repetitive transport loops

Infrastructure: Route mapping and traffic rules.

  • 02

    Replenishment & Bin Movement

Keeping pick faces and lines supplied on time.

    • Replenishment
    • Bin movement

    Infrastructure: WMS task integration.

  • 03

    Picking Assistance

    Reducing walking time for pickers.

    • Goods-to-person support
    • Pick-cart following

    Infrastructure: Barcode or RFID confirmation.

  • 04

    Line Feeding & Internal Logistics

    Delivering parts to production lines.

    • Line feeding
    • Internal logistics

Infrastructure: ERP / MES signals and edge compute.

Integration Possibilities

AMR fleets depend on infrastructure. Roaming, coverage gaps and latency affect navigation and task handover, so network and system integration are planned with the robots, not after them.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is the difference between an AMR and an AGV?

An AGV follows fixed paths such as magnetic tape. An AMR navigates with sensors and maps, and can re-route around obstacles. AMRs usually need less floor modification but more attention to network coverage.

02

Do AMRs need a WMS integration?

Not always. Simple transport loops can run standalone. Replenishment and picking tasks usually benefit from WMS or ERP integration, which is scoped with the integration partner.

03

Is Wi-Fi enough, or is private 5G needed?

Many sites run AMRs on well-designed enterprise Wi-Fi. Private 5G may be considered for very large or outdoor areas. The choice follows a coverage and roaming review.
