MDM enrolls and policies phones and tablets. UEM is the wider term for the same kind of control across computers and mobile devices: enrollment, applications, patches, and the settings the product can actually push. Novatelia’s unified endpoint management solution is that wider scope. A product page does not mean every device type is in the license.

Key points
- Start from the device types, not from the acronym.
- A computer policy and a phone policy are different profiles.
- Endpoint Central is a product reference, not a required brand.
Definition
Use MDM when the estate is mobile. Use UEM when laptops and desktops are in the same administration problem. The mechanism is still enrollment plus a policy the device will accept.
How it works
A device enrolls, receives a profile, and reports back. Computers often use an agent. Phones use the vendor’s enrollment program. The console can only push a setting the operating system allows.
Architecture
- Inventory of computers, phones, and tablets.
- Enrollment path for each operating system.
- Profiles for applications, encryption, and the updates in scope.
Use cases
- A campus must control lab computers and staff phones.
- A company wants application deployment without a separate tool per operating system.
- Patch reporting for workstations belongs with endpoint management, not only with a vulnerability scanner.
Comparison
- MDM
- Phones and tablets, enrollment, and mobile profiles.
- UEM
- Those devices plus computers, applications, and workstation policy.
Selection guidance
- Count devices by operating system before choosing a license.
- Confirm the console supports each enrollment method.
- Keep vulnerability scanning on its own solution when the question is exposure, not configuration.
Questions
Does UEM include EDR?
Not by definition. Management pushes policy and software. Detection of malicious activity is the endpoint-security solution. Some suites sell both, and the design should say which license is which.
Is this Microsoft Intune?
Only when the organization already has the Microsoft 365 license that includes Intune. The endpoint-management solution does not assume that license.
