Aircraft Electrical & EWIS Testing

Aircraft electrical and EWIS testing checks the electrical wiring interconnection system – wires, connectors, terminals, splices and their supports, as defined in 14 CFR 25.1701 [1] – for continuity, shorts, insulation resistance and correct function. A typical commercial aircraft carries around 170 km of wiring [2]. Novatelia sources selected EWIS test systems by RFQ for customers in Oman and qualified GCC projects.
Applications
- Harness shop and sub-assembly testing before installation [3][2].
- Installed-wiring test on final assembly or during heavy maintenance [4].
- Engine and APU harness 'e-test' and active-component function test in MRO [5].
- Bond and loop-resistance testing on fuelled aircraft with an intrinsically safe tester [6].
Equipment types
- Automatic harness testers with continuity, shorts, dielectric withstand (DW) and insulation resistance (IR) [3].
- Distributed or satellite switching systems for whole-aircraft test [5][3].
- Real-time scanners for testing during installation, using about 90% fewer interface cables [4].
- Intrinsically safe loop-resistance testers (Zone 0) [6].
Test functions
- 2- and 4-wire (Kelvin) resistance [5][3].
- HV DC insulation resistance and HV AC/DC hi-pot; Automeg models up to 8,000 Vdc [7].
- Capacitance with distance-to-fault indication [5].
How to select equipment
- Point count and test voltage needed for your harnesses [7].
- Bench, mobile or distributed format [7][3].
- Intrinsic-safety certification if testing fuelled aircraft [6].
- Whether the aircraft maintenance manual specifies a particular tool [2].
Customer types
- MROs and airline base maintenance
- Harness and component shops
- Engine and APU shops
Relevant standards and guidance
