What Is Aliro 1.0? Digital Access Control Explained
Access control standards
Aliro is an open standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) that defines how a phone or smartwatch presents a digital key to a door reader or lock. Version 1.0 was released on 26 February 2026. This guide explains what the standard covers, what has been certified so far, and what building owners, hotels and developers in Oman should check before writing Aliro into a specification.

Labels used on this page: Documented means shown in a CSA certification record or stated in an official manufacturer, platform or regulator document. Announced means officially announced as future or roadmap work. Not documented means no public source was found, so it must be confirmed with the manufacturer.
What Aliro 1.0 is, and what it is not
- A credential and communication standard for the moment a user device meets a reader. It covers the exchange between a phone or wearable and a lock or wall reader (documented, CSA).
- Not a building management system. Aliro does not define how the reader talks to the rest of the building; that link can use Matter, Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a proprietary protocol (documented, CSA position paper and Silicon Labs).
- Meant for many building types. CSA names corporate offices, universities, hospitality venues, and single- and multi-family homes (documented, CSA).
- Backed by a certification programme. Products are tested through CSA Authorized Test Labs and listed in the CSA database with a certificate ID (documented, CSA).
CSA states that Apple, Google and Samsung committed to the standard, so a single credential format can work with the wallets already built into phones. What each wallet supports today is a separate question, covered below.
How Aliro works at the door: NFC, Bluetooth LE and UWB
| Transport | User experience | Status |
|---|---|---|
| NFC | Tap the phone or watch on the reader. Silicon Labs notes NFC is required for certification. | Documented |
| Bluetooth LE | User-initiated access from a longer distance, for example from an app prompt. | Documented |
| Bluetooth LE + UWB | Hands-free access: UWB measures distance securely, so the door can open as an authorized user approaches. | Documented |
A certified product does not have to support every transport. The CSA record for each product, and the manufacturer’s documentation, show which ones it actually implements. Always read both for the exact model and firmware.

For a deeper comparison of range, power and security, read NFC, BLE and UWB for building access.
Security and offline operation
- Public-key (asymmetric) cryptography between the user device and the reader (documented, CSA).
- Mutual authentication, certificate-based identities and encrypted communication (documented, Silicon Labs).
- Works without network coverage, for example in underground car parks and lifts, because the phone and reader talk directly (documented, CSA).
- Validity periods can only be enforced by a reader that has a trusted time source, and how revocation is handled depends on the implementation (documented in Nordic Semiconductor’s reference implementation). Ask every vendor how its product handles expiry and revocation.
Which phone wallets support Aliro today
| Wallet | What the official sources show | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Google Wallet | CSA Aliro 1.0 certificate CSA26016SWC60254-A2 (10 March 2026, software component). Google release notes of 15 September 2026 say Campus ID access passes support Aliro. | Documented |
| Samsung Wallet | CSA Aliro 1.0 certificate CSA26039SWC60277-A2 (8 September 2026). Samsung launched an Aliro-based Digital Home Key in March 2026 in selected regions. | Documented |
| Apple Wallet | Apple announced an LG smart lock for Apple Home that supports Aliro, for the US and Canada from December 2026. No Apple wallet record was found in the CSA database. | Announced |
| Availability in Oman | No official statement found for any wallet’s Aliro features in Oman. | Not documented |
Because support depends on the phone model, region and lock, test with the phones your residents, guests and staff actually carry.
Examples of Aliro-certified products
| Product | CSA record | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Nuki Keypad 2 NFC | CSA26003ALR80003-NF, 26 February 2026. CSA states it implements Aliro via NFC. | A residential keypad that pairs with a Matter-capable Nuki Smart Lock. Nuki positions it for homes and short-stay rentals. |
| Last Lock C100 (Core Series) | CSA26006ALR80006-NF, 4 March 2026. The record does not state which Aliro transport is certified. | Commercial lock cylinders with an integrated reader. Last Lock lists 125 kHz, NFC, Bluetooth LE and UWB credential hardware. |
Novatelia is evaluating these products and is in discussion with the manufacturers. It is not a partner or authorized reseller of either.
What is still on the roadmap
CSA describes Aliro 1.0 as the foundation of a living standard and names secure key sharing as a future phase. Samsung Research also lists server-based provisioning and key sharing as future work (announced). For hotels this matters: issuing a guest key into a phone wallet from a property management system is not yet documented as a standard Aliro workflow. See hotel mobile key options.
What to verify before specifying Aliro in Oman
- The CSA certificate ID and the transports listed for the exact model and firmware.
- Which wallets work with that product today, in Oman, on which phone models.
- Offline behaviour, credential expiry, revocation and audit logs.
- Integration with the access-control platform or PMS, treated as a verification item, not an assumption.
- Approval for the radio equipment under Oman TRA rules, plus local warranty, spares and support.
- Door hardware compatibility and any fire-door requirements.
Novatelia’s technical assessment and BOQ review can turn this list into a written scope for a specific building.
Questions and answers
01What is Aliro 1.0?
Aliro 1.0 is an open access-credential and communication standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, released on 26 February 2026. It lets phones and wearables present a digital key to certified door readers and locks over NFC, Bluetooth LE, or Bluetooth LE with UWB.
02Is Aliro the same as Matter?
No. Matter is a smart-home standard for controlling and managing devices over IP networks. Aliro defines the credential exchange at the door. A lock can support both, with Matter used for setup and management.
03Does Aliro work without internet?
Yes. CSA states that Aliro works in places without network coverage because the phone and the reader communicate directly. Enforcing expiry dates still requires the reader to have a trusted time source.
04Which phones can use Aliro?
Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet hold CSA Aliro 1.0 certificates, and Apple has announced an Aliro-capable lock for Apple Home. Support depends on phone model, region and lock, so availability in Oman should be tested before deployment.
05Is Novatelia an authorized Aliro product reseller?
No. Novatelia is evaluating Aliro products and is in discussion with manufacturers, but is not a partner or authorized reseller of any manufacturer named on this page.
06Can Aliro be used in hotels in Oman today?
It can be piloted. Public documentation does not yet show a hotel PMS issuing Aliro guest keys into phone wallets at scale, so a showroom demo or a pilot on non-guest doors is the sensible first step.
