Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM / DOM) Explained
Optical Engineering Guide
How to interpret SFF-8472 optical diagnostics to detect dirty connectors, fiber breaks, and laser degradation in real time.
Technical Attribute Comparison Matrix
TX Power (dBm)Laser transmitter output powerNormal: -1 to -8 dBm (depends on model)
RX Power (dBm)Received light from far endAlert threshold: Below -14 to -20 dBm indicates high loss
Temperature (°C)Internal optical module diode tempNormal: 0°C to 70°C (Commercial) / -40°C to 85°C (Industrial)
Laser Bias CurrentCurrent driving the optical diodeElevated mA values indicate aging laser approaching end of life
Pre-Procurement Checklist
Run "show interfaces transceiver detail" on switch CLI to inspect real-time dBm values.
Investigate if RX power drops by >3 dB over time; this indicates dirty connectors or microbends.
Ensure module is fully inserted until the latch clicks into place.
