Aircraft Battery Maintenance

Aircraft battery maintenance is the shop work that keeps main and emergency batteries able to deliver their rated capacity. A battery shop charges the battery, runs a constant-current capacity discharge, measures individual cell voltages and temperature, and records the result for each serial number. ATEQ Aviation offers charge/discharge benches for battery shops on commercial, corporate, helicopter and military aircraft, with separate testers for Ni-Cd and lead-acid chemistries [1]. Its BCA charger analyser charges, discharges and analyses Ni-Cd, lead-acid and lithium batteries from a 7 inch touchscreen [2].
Applications
- Capacity (discharge) testing of aircraft batteries at constant current [2].
- Charging at constant current or constant voltage [2].
- Individual cell voltage measurement for up to 24 cells [2].
- Deep discharge of Ni-Cd batteries for cell replacement work, which ATEQ links to the Ni-Cd electrolyte technology [2].
Equipment types
- Battery charger analysers for all chemistries, e.g. ATEQ BCA [2].
- Lead-acid battery analysers and chargers, e.g. ATEQ BA 1500 and BC 1500 (12/24 V) [1].
- Remote cell measurement units and temperature probes as options [2].
How to select equipment
- Battery chemistry on your fleet: Ni-Cd, lead-acid or lithium [2].
- Maximum voltage and current: the BCA comes in 75 V / 40 A and 48 V / 60 A versions [2].
- Number of batteries serviced at once: the BCA charges two batteries or fully discharges one [2].
- Data storage and network management for traceability [2].
Customer types
- Airline battery shops
- MRO component shops
- Helicopter and business-aviation operators
- Ground support equipment workshops
Good practice
- Follow the battery manufacturer's component maintenance manual for charge and discharge rates, end voltages and temperature limits; keep Ni-Cd and lead-acid shops separated as the manuals require.

Oman & GCC support
For aircraft battery maintenance, Novatelia handles sourcing, quotation and delivery coordination from Muscat for Oman customers and on a project basis for other GCC countries; see Aviation supply in Oman. Novatelia does not claim local OEM service centres or civil aviation authority approvals.
Frequently asked technical questions
Can one analyser handle Ni-Cd and lead-acid batteries?
The ATEQ BCA supports Ni-Cd, lead-acid and lithium chemistries [2].
Why measure individual cells?
Cell voltages show weak cells during discharge; the BCA measures up to 24 cells with the cell option [2].
